Holidays

Mindfulness

A while ago I had read either a magazine article or blog posting on mindfulness, on just being cognizant of the present.  Being aware.  I’m hoping that by being mindful in my actions, my thoughts, my work that I can influence  Things 1, 2 and 3 to do the same.  The Mister is already really mindful (maybe it comes from being Japanese), while my mindfulness is still a work in progress.

One thing, though, is that I’ve found that in being more mindful, I learn so much.

Take, for example, the holidays.  I get caught up in the gift-giving (and receiving!!), the consumerism, the tinsel and mistletoe. I shop locally, I shop online. I make things (and buy the stuff to make even more stuff), and I buy (many many many) more.  And as an adult, I realize that these products are typically made overseas, and I do my best to support local retailers and craftspeople, but even their products (or raw materials) have to come from somewhere.  Honestly, though, until I worked with my current organization, I didn’t give a second thought to how most of the stuff we buy got here.

But that’s important, too.  That’s being mindful–being aware of and recognizing  the hard work and sacrifice behind the joys of the season.

I invite you to watch this short vid.  I hope it prompts some questions and inspires you to learn more.
