Each project consists of two or three classes–the Friday night class is for pattern and fabric cutting, and we sew on Sunday. If you are unable to attend a Friday night session, contact me, so we can work out a solution. The cost of each class includes a sewing journal and pattern, but not the fabric or other supplies. Upon registering, you will receive a detailed supply list with sources for appropriate fabrics.
Friday classes are 7-9pm and Sunday classes start promptly at 1pm. The last 3 classes will start earlier on Sunday and will also have a Saturday session. All classes are held at The Creativity Caravan at 28 Fullerton Ave in Montclair.
September 10: Introduction to Garment Sewing ($50). In this class we will review all the garments in the capsule wardrobe, discuss appropriate fabrics and sources, take our own accurate measurements and record them in our sewing journals, and review machine mechanics. Bring: tape measure, pencils, sewing machine.
October 6 and 10: Laura Wrap Skirt from Seamwork Magazine ($150 + supplies). Create your own bias cut, midi-length wrap skirt. Learn how to cut fabric on the bias, apply interfacing, edge stitch, lengthen or shorten patterns, and hem evenly. Bring: pencil and journal, pins, scissors, sewing machine.
November 10 and 12: Portfolio Tunic from Simplicity ($150 + supplies) This cute pocketed tunic has so many options for personalization: long or short sleeves, tunic-length or shirt, contrast color-blocking. Learn to apply facings, sew curved seams, and insert a zipper. Bring: pencil and journal, pins, scissors, sewing machine.
January 12 and 14: Sloan Leggings from Hey June ($150 + supplies) Everyone needs a good pair of leggings in their wardrobe. The Sloan leggings feature an optional paneled insert (suitable for a contrast fabric), a pocket hidden in the waistband, and come in both a capri and full length! Learn to sew with knits, and how to use a serger and twin needle for a professional finish. Bring: pencil and journal, pins, scissors, sewing machine.
February 9 and 11: Union St. T Shirt from Hey June ($150 + supplies) T-shirts are staples! The Union St. Tee offers plenty of customization: v-neck, scoop or crew neck, long, short or 3/4 sleeve. Learn how to work with knits, use a serger, and hem with a twin needle. Bring: pencil and journal, pins, scissors, sewing machine.
March 9 and 11: Kalle Shirt or Shirtdress from Closet Case Patterns ($200 + supplies) The Kalle dress is perfect for a capsule wardrobe: you decide which piece you need: a shirt, tunic or shirtdress, whether you want a popover or buttondown, and what type of collar–mandarin or shirt collar. Learn how to hem curves with bias tape, create a button placket, sew accurate buttonholes, and make a traditional stand or mandarin collar. Bring: pencil and journal, pins, scissors, sewing machine.
April 6, 7 and 8: Tamarack Jacket from Grainline Studios ($250 + supplies) The Tamarack Jacket is the perfect spring and fall jacket. Sewn with two layers of lighter weight cotton sandwiching quilt batting, the slightly boxy, drop shoulder jacket is roomy enough for a sweater underneath, or can be worn alone. Learn to baste fabric layers, machine quilt garment pieces, apply bias binding on a curve, create bound seams, and install snaps, hook and eye, or zip closures. Bring: pencil and journal, pins, scissors, sewing machine.
May 11, 12 and 13: Morgan Jeans from Closet Case Patterns ($300 + supply kit) The Morgan Jeans are a boyfriend style jean made from 100% cotton denim. Learn all parts of jeans construction: curved waistbands, accurate topstitching, installing a zip or button fly, adjusting for length, sewing bar tacks, attaching belt loops. There are lots of steps, but the final result is worth it! Bring: pencil and journal, pins, scissors, sewing machine.
